Deltora Quest - 02

Okay, with this post, I’ve made up my mind. Deltora Quest will be blogged, Himarari!! won’t. That makes three series I’ll be blogging this season. Will Venus Versus Virus make four?

In any case, I really like Jasmine and Barda. Jasmine got introduced in this episode, and she has quite an interesting character. Already she’s moving away from the usual female side-kick. She’s got a rather sad case. When she was 9 years old, her parents were abducted by some evil guards, and ever since, she spent her time alone in the forest. Because of that, she learned quite some interesting abilities, like the ability to talk to trees (What? You can’t do that? ^^;), and she trained a cute pet and crow quite well. She’s also probably one of the first female side-kicks who actually knows what she’s talking about.

Barda (I keep spelling his name as Baruda… damn katakana) on the other hand, is the skilled warrior with the subtle sense of humour. These first two episodes also showed that he isn’t perfect, especially when he fights and has to keep an eye out on Lief. He first collapsed because Lief was doing something stupid, making him get hit, and later he takes his eye off Lief in order to ambush the monster. He obviously starts yelling at him when he finds out that Lief also went to try and slay it. ;)

This anime also is moving surprisingly fast. I originally suspected that each country would get a large number of episodes dedicated to it, though with a bit of math, it seems that in order to give all seven countries some attention, each can only have three episodes for itself, with the ±5 final episodes dedicated to close the story. It’ll be interesting to see this, seeing as I’m currently watching Futago Hime as well, which is a show which spends a lot of episodes dedicated to one country.

  2. Ack, my bad. I assumed that this anime will be of the standard-length, but apparently, this one is going to be longer than usual.

  3. ็How many book do they’re gonna cover?
I heard that this ia a tri-part series, First part has 8 books and the other part has 4 books each.

I wish they’ll cover it all but I afraid that there’s gonna be just the first part.

  4. Yay, glad you’re blogging DQ (and Master of Epic) too. Actually I thought this might be a 26 episode series, 3 episodes or so per book or location, but TVTokyo’s early morning shows are usually long running ones 39 or 52 (as you probably know from blogging someof them) so I think we can expect a long series. They may do the other books after DQ, but I couldn’t find any concrete evidence of the length. I’m hoping for a long run though, especially if the quality remains consistent. Cheers.

  5. first series of books contain 8 book, one for each gem and one for the journey back

second series has 3 books (wont explain plot, might be spoilers)

third series has 4 books and concludes the story (probably anyway, the author might come up with some new hehe)

  6. From someone who’s read the series they are doing rather well, and they rest of the books are probally going to have more then 3 episodes per book, since they cut half of book one… which makes sense as it wouldn’t of worked in a visual represenation of the book.
For those who are interested… the series of books go as follows.

Series 1: Forests of Silence, Lake of Tears, City of Rats, Shifting Sands, Dread Mountain, Maze of the Beast, Valley of the Lost, Return to Del.

Series 2: Cavern of Fear, Isle of Illusions, Shadowlands

Series 3: Dragons’ Nest, Shadowgate, Isle of the Dead, Sister of the South.

They will probally cover all of them, as there is quite a few loose threads at the end of the first and second series… and I’ve read somewhere that there is 56 episodes.

  7. Jasmine was not 9 years old when her parents were abducted she was 7 according to the books. And ‘The Evil Guards’ were Grey Guards. I read the book and vertually know them off by heart.

  8. Hmm, that’s a strange one. In the anime, she’s 16, and she said that she was separated from her parents seven years ago. But then again, that can also be a mistake of the subbers and myself.

  9. I started watching Deltora Quest but I was a bit reluctant at first because I’ve read the books and the got boring after the 5th one for me . Pretty good start althrough Lief’s hair colour is changed from brown to blonde but I’m just picky . This has to be the first time an Australian series was turned anime .

    YAY AUSTRALIA !

  10. I hope the anime manages to fix the boringness after the fifth book, as it’s definitely turning interesting right now.

And yeah, I can understand your feelings a bit, there’s also been only one dutch story which got turned into an anime, and that happened almost twenty years ago. :P

  13. Heh, nice to see a fellow european. And I can imagine the books being really good, since they spawned this anime. ^^

  14. Okay, the series is okay but i really don’t like the underlying themes. First why did they have to turn Lief’s hair blonde, what is black hair no longer good enough? And second…Jasmine in the skirt, okay i get it she’s in an anime and even though she’s portrayed better than other female anime characters she’s still in a skirt! I mean come on i’ve read all these books and she’s grown up in a forest! Her persoanlity, she looks down fancy outfits at one part of the series and now they dress her up in them. Seriously this is so not being true to her character. I making allowances cause its anime but really is it that bad to see a female character not wearing a skirt?
