The jewel was delivered to Gorl after the Shadowlord took over Deltora. So Gorl is at least a good few hundred years old. The story is mentioned in the Tenna Birdsong tales. There's a page on him in "The Deltora Book of Monsters" and the full story can be found in "Tales of Deltora".
