Sure, they could've done some sort of flashback later on, but that would disrupt the flow of events. I haven't taken the liberty of reading the manga myself, so what I've said is purely speculation. That bugged me as well, I thought the whole episode in general had too many uncanny coincidences to be believable.

Added to that, I hate Melo. N is a decent successor to L though. And interestingly enough, I’ve made those matchstick towers as well XD I tend to turn anything I can find into a puzzle when I’m bored.
