I seem to have missed that part, but indeed, that makes the situation even worse. Poor Daichii.

The characters in this episode clearly state that Daichii's father was not dead, he told them "I'll be leaving now" or "Ite kuru". This adds another dimension to the episode. False hope. Daichii and the oldest sister believe that their dad will be coming back, yet knowing deep deep down inside that he's probably dead. The weight and responsibility placed on his sister's shoulder after his passing must've been overwhelming. She's a what? 7th grader?

There may be 4 boys left but there are also 5 girls left (excluding Kana since she is not included in the contract). A girl is next, so that will even things out.
