Without reading the manga, I can safely declare that each & every episode has been absolutely top-notch in its plot, characterization, and pacing.

The manga is a different medium which means the content will always be different. Much like how the manga & the anime of Evangelion are two different versions of the story, I imagine the same applies to Bokura No.

Expecting a slavish adaptation of something into a different medium is the first mistake. The second mistake is to expect a canonical story to be authoritative and treat every deviation as heretical distortion of something pure.

It is the retelling in new mediums that keeps the story alive.

I've more or less dropped the anime. Probably not going to bother watching eps 16+ until the show ends and I know what happens at the end.

The manga, however, continues to be incredible. It's a pity that the awesomeness that is Kanji's storyline right now will likely not be in the anime.

I don't really mind the diversion from the manga. The anime's storyline was good enough for me and I can still go read the manga anytime I want.

"Anyway, this episode has to be anime-original"

Every episode from 14 and up has been anime-original, just so you know. And since the current pilots left still have to get their turn in the manga as well, it will stay anime-original.

Basically, first half was from the manga, second half original. Hence most manga readers being upset, myself excluded though :3
