I just recently saw some clips of this series in an AMV. It was a serious AMV so I was surprised to see this little cute characters that probably belonged to some comedy series. And then I'm immediately presented with some more disturbing images of one of the characters being attacked.
I still haven't read the manga or even watched this, but the manga is 3 volumes long and finished. There's also a sequel dating 2003 called "Alien Nine Emulators".
As for the combination of cute drawing style with more seinen themes, I think it's natural if know some of the author's previous work, the same artist did the artwork for the Battle Royal sequel.

An uncompleted anime with a girl crying all the time... A lot of wasted potential... My rating: 40/100

If you buy the special-edition DVD release of it here, it comes with three volumes of manga, I guess to help finish off the story. Still have yet to read them (I don't read much manga!), but I did very muchly enjoy the anime. It reminded me a lot of Narutaru: same sort of juxtaposition of "cute on the surface" and "extremely dark at its core." And same sense of being COMPLETELY UNFINISHED, too. (:

This show has a really dark side to it that is not apparent unless one reads the manga.

This anime could have been awesome if it didn't come to an abrupt end, leaving you with to many unsolved questions.
If i were to mark it 80%, i'd rather give it half the mark, cause this is only hal an anime :S so 40% is what it deserves
