I'd been wondering for a while why you aren't happy with the fights in Soul Eater, since they're consistently some of the best anime has to offer, but I wonder if that's what you mean - the fights may be technically impressive, but with a few exceptions, they've been largely action for the sake of action, without a lot to get you emotionally invested. There was a little more at stake this fight - character development was actually advanced during it.

Maka's VA. Instead of the usual monotone, when she was yelling, it actually sounded battle-cry-ish. I did give a cheer for that. It'll amuse me greatly if she turns out to be a good screamer, like Nice Holystone's VA. And the thing about Soul Eater is that most of what it has right now is still potential that we have to wait and see if Bones can live up to. The manga isn't badly paced at all, but the chapters simply aren't long enough to make a full episode out of each without drawing out the material. They really need to start setting their own pace soon, especially if they intend to come up with their own ending.
