I'd be a little disappointed if they scrapped the light humour. Druaga and Natsume Yuujinchou are what I'm looking forward to the most as well as Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Rei (Season 3). As for Production I.G., shame on them! They produced Ghost in the Shell, Blood: The Last Vampire, xxxHolic, FLCL, Ghost Hound, Library War, Blade of the Immortal etc. etc. How could they fall so far? It's amazing how quickly they put it up in official telecast. They put the OP, ED and the works. I guess it's a serviceable show. Strikes me as Mai Hime-ish in terms of Sunrise efforts of the past. And yeah, continuations or not, I guess your point still stands. The thing is, though there's still some quality sequels, there's inevitably the bad ones. At least since GITS SAC, Production I.G. has been known for their virtually flawless use of CGI combined with highly consistent traditional animation.
