Full Metal Alchemist - The Blind Alchemist OVA

Okay, as requested: an entry about the recently released OVA of Full Metal Alchemist called the Blind Alchemist. It’s going to be a short entry because it’s a pretty straightforward episode, but it’s interesting to mention it nonetheless.
So basically Ed and Al meet an alchemist who is supposed to have successfully performed a human transmutation. It turns out that he also failed to perform one, lost his eyes, and ever since his family has been deceiving him by using a fake girl from some orphanage. It’s an interesting story without a conclusion, though it doesn’t really need one. The family will most likely happily live together until either the alchemist dies, or something else of that magnitude.
What’s interesting about this story is that it comes from the time in which Ed and Al still believed that human transmutation really brought back the dead. Ever since we learned that it didn’t, but the interesting thing here is that the transmuted person was actually kept alive. My guess is that there is some poor soul caught in that body, unable to do anything. It’s her who I feel sorry for the most.

Interesting they made an OVA for this. I wonder if they’ll animate some of the other gaiden chapters of the manga.

Is this from FMA: Brotherhood? The animation looks too good/different to be an OVA of the first FMA Anime.

Yeah, it’s from Brotherhood.

I am not sure if there is a soul in that body. I thought human transmutations fail mainly because it is impossible to transmute a soul, and the body also will not come from the original person.
The ending was creepy. Unlike the brothers and their teacher, this family decided to keep the body instead of burying it.

I remember reading this from the actual manga itself. I think they did a decent job with the adaptation. Though maybe it’s just me but it didn’t feel as sad, but then again I rarely get sad over things I watch.

pgal, Al’s soul was put into their “mom”s body, which is something they mentioned a while back in Brotherhood. So I think human transmutation IS possible, it’s just not possible to decide who/what exactly you’re going to create

It’s not impossible to transmute a soul, proof of that is AL and the other souls in armor. “Flesh and soul are connected by the spirit.” is what Ed said in eps 26. My assumption is that since the little girl died and her body was still around, (not taken by the gate like AL or buried) the blind alchemist tried to get her soul back from the gate, put it in the original body and like most if not all do failed since her spirit, I guess, was to weak to connect the two again and grabbed a random soul instead.
